Exposure
The normal map derived from following the derivative of the iterations can be used to create a 3d “shadow” effect. But if you shift the output past 1 after normalizing you often get an over-exposure effect like in this piece. I know it has some out-of-place boundaries in the flat areas but that’s likely an artifact of compounding floating point imprecision. I still haven’t thought of a viable way to get around it that doesn’t completely obliterate render performance.
